In a slightly modified version of the method a small upwards-oriented LED was added to the moth's end of a wire. This led constantly emitted a low-intensity light and flashed when the click was recorded from a moth. A photo camera in a bulb (long exposure) mode fixed above the arena recorded the tracks of a moth.
Red lights on the three obstacles served as a coordinate markers for tracking and were switched on for one second before each test.
